Active School Flag

About the Active School Flag

The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in 2009. It is a non-competitive initiative which seeks to recognise schools (both primary and post primary) that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community. Guardian Angels’ NS is committed to promoting physical activity in our school and we were delighted to achieve an Active School Flag in 2018.  Drop Everything and Dance and Run a K a Day are among some of the activities which help to keep the children in our school as active as possible, as well as a host of extra curricular activities. We aim to include additional activities in the coming months in order to retain our Active School Flag and work towards achieving our second.

To help achieve our second Active Flag, the whole school is Running Around Ireland to visit as many landmarks as we can while getting lots of exercise and fresh air. Click here to check out all the landmarks we’ve visited so far. For lots of regular updates on this run and lots more activities, keep an eye on our Twitter account.

This year we will focus on Athletics in our PE curriculum.

In order to achieve our second Active School Flag, Guardian Angels’ NS will:

1. Commit to a process of self evaluation in terms of the PE programmes and physical opportunities that we offer.

2. Plan and implement a series of changes that will enhance PE and extracurricular provision and promote physical activity.

3. All teachers, using the Move Well, Move Often resources, prioritise four different fundamental movement skills for further development within the PE programme every year.

4. All pupils receive PE homework once per week, related to the PE strand that they are working on at the time.

5. Our ASF committee developed an ASF – Physical Activity Reward Chart and as a school we have replaced ‘sweets as treats’.

6. All senior classes will be given a copy of the 60 Minutes Physical Activity Challenge to complete, as homework, at least three times this year.

7. Our school will distribute the ASF PUPIL questionnaire, discuss the findings and act upon the feedback.

8. Our school will distribute the ASF PARENT questionnaire, discuss the finding and act upon the feedback.

9. We will introduce a completely new activity to our #ASF programme every year.

The initiative encourages a partnership approach. It empowers schools to become more proactive in approaching groups like National Governing Bodies (NGBs), Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs), the HSE, Education Centres and the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) to help and support them to develop their PE programmes and to promote physical activity.

Encourage your child to participate in 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every day.
